The Barrington area is a wonderful place to live whether you’re raising a family, running a business or simply enjoying the many traditions of this vibrant community. The community is known for its country living, wooded beauty, and gentle rolling landscape dotted with idyllic lakes. Ninety square miles affectionately called “The Countryside” surround the village. The open green spaces with the popular equestrian farms have been carefully planned to preserve natural resources and the charm and feel of a small town. The historic village of Barrington is in reality a thriving commercial and industrial hub for the area. Downtown Barrington is a vital, attractive shopping area with convenient parking. A charming blend of storefronts, it has a splendid gazebo plaza at its center. Victorian street lights, planters, pedestrian benches and brick paved walkways add to the historic atmosphere.
Residents here take an active role and share a great deal of civic pride in the excellent school system, the variety of housing options, the numerous parks and recreational opportunities for all ages and the wide assortments of restaurants.
The business community enjoys the association of an elite group of corporate neighbors - Allstate Insurance, Recon Optical, Ameritech, GE Capital, Pepsico Research & Development, Siemens, and SBC - whose businesses are thriving in the Barrington area. What’s their secret to success? As the old saying goes, “location, location.” Simply put, the Barrington community offers its corporate neighbors a wonderful location with a wonderful network of major roadways, fast, comfortable Metra trains and the regional Transportation Authority’s Pace System. These not only connect Barrington residents with the rest of Chicagoland, but also make Barrington accessible to a large metropolitan workforce with a large, local pool of well educated and informed workers, low crime and safe neighborhoods and a robust, local economy.
The Barrington area spreads across six townships and Cook, Lake, Kane, and McHenry counties, making its political geography complex. The Barrington Area Council of Government (BACOG), was created to coordinate planning, development and shared services. This cooperative planning has enabled the area to enjoy controlled growth, both demographically and commercially, while protecting its natural resources and preventing its idyllic rural character.
